Pagers activated at 00:53hrs by Valentia MRCC. task Crosshaven Coast Guard to investigate the sighting of red flares in the Myrtleville / Fountainstown area of Crosshaven on the seaward side. Crosshaven Coast Guard Boat launch and shore crew search teams search the area. Area Officer met the resident who reported the sighting and from that, we were able to triangulate the co-ordinates. The units discover that a nearby bar and restaurant was holding a late night wedding party and fired off Chinese Lanterns. Unfortunately, the Chinese Lanterns burn with a red flame, giving the impression that there was a vessel in distress, as a red flare is an internationally recognised symbol for distress. The proprietor was informed of the situation, and was not aware of the consequences of their actions. MRSC Valentia informed of the situation and Crosshaven Coast Guard report false alarm with good intent. All search teams report back to station, serviced the equipment and closed down.
